This trend forecast for Spring/Summer 16 has been taken by WGSN from a number of sources ranging from insagrammers to directional brands. I will be following it up after the fashion season with my definitive list.
We are looking a more feminine direction of colours such as bubblegum pink in contemporary styling (i.e not barbie doll!) , with warmer browns following on from AW15. Deep sea blues will work well with iridescent and we will see a more antique white. There will also be neutrals, earth tones & vibrant hues.
Florals are seen in two types; either feminine graceful florals or vibrant large scale outline blooms in retro inspired prints.
The 70’s will be slowing down for SS16 but there will still be some references of boho with busy vintage inspired patterns. Colour blocking will be updated with modernist influences in mid tones & bright shades in geometric jigsaw prints.
Crisp stripes will not only in classic monochrome & navy but more refreshingly in rainbow colours that follow the trends seen in menswear (see my Menswear blog)
Fluid shapes that play with draping such as the new goddess dress or boho gypsey dress will be popular and updated pastoral dresses will be perfect for the festival season. The 60’s mini dresses will follow on from AW15 whilst the blouse dress offers a more editorial look.
For outerwear, the long fluid coat & poncho styles are ones we are used to seeing, but due to their popularity & publicity this year they are also set to be popular for SS16.
We’ve also been seeing a lot of sportswear trends lately so outerwear such as the lightweight sport coat will be a new alternative whilst trucker jackets will be given a more updated look with fringing & embroidery.
We will still be seeing more elegant high neck shirts, but the bell sleeve is set to be a new shape for the summer.
Cropped tops have been very popular this year so for SS16 we will see a shorter micro version which will be perfect for any gym bunnies! In contrast, the slouch tank & tank dress will work for those fluid shapes & draping I mentioned earlier.
Something refreshing and new though we will see next year is a reference to ballet clothing including both wrap and off the shoulder tops.
We have seen some polo tops this year but its belived this will also be popular for SS16 with more contemporary and elegant sloganning.
Asymmetric handkerchief hems and delicate midi skirts with sheer and pleated material create a more feminine look and culottes will be given a more sporty look with the key being an elasticated waist.
Flairs can be tricky for most, so moving away from the full on 70’s flairs will be the cropped kick flare (including turn-up hem detail) whilst jumpsuits will be updated with the increasingly popular wide leg tailoring.
Broderie Anglaise adds a vintage feminine feel with gingham appearing in more softer tones.
Texture will be seen in hand loom knits, lace, raw & rustic fabrics and needlepoint denim. We’ve already seen the needlepoint denim trend for MENSWEAR SS16 so we are look set to see it for women’s wear as well.
Soft sheen will work well for summer evenings and again was something we saw on the menswear SS16 catwalks.
Fluid silk & pretty sheers provide the soft feminine silhouettes whilst netted knits and raw edging give a different dimension.
Bared shoulders (as mentioned earlier for the ballet look) in particular cut out shoulders look to be a big trend.
We’ve already seen over sized eyelets this year worn by the likes of Kim Kardashian in Proenza Schouler and scuba inspired swimwear so there is no surprise it will take off for SS16.
See below for the accessories we are looking to see from architectural shaped jewelry to over sized crystals.
