Graduate Fashion Week 2014…The Winner Is….

Graduate Fashion week is always an exciting event to attend as its full of unrestricted creativity.

In its 23rd year with over 40x UK colleges, plus colleges from 14 other countries, including Japan, America, Russia, Sri Lanka, France and Italy, its the prefect place to discover the latest fashion talent or what critics are dubbing ‘the future of fashion’.

This year, GFW was set across 4x floors in the new venue of the Trueman Brewery, in London’s trendy Shoreditch which was in my opinion an excellent venue.
With press pass in hand, I managed to chat to a few of the designers and watch a number of the shows including the coveted George Awards ceremony. (More on the winners shortly).

The great thing about GFW is that it is a great opportunity to give new designers a chance to mingle with industry professionals, learn from them, and likewise get scouted by passing design house. Seminars I visited were the ‘Fashion in house: PR v Agency’ with one of the head of sales from Vivienne Westwood and Tea and Cake PR which was very informative  and I also visited the ‘Hilary Alexander in conversation with Agi & Sam’ which was incredibly inspirational and having met Agi & Sam and know their achievements, came away with even more admiration.

I cant go through each college in this blog, but needless to say I was very impressed with the students collections and portfolios. Here are a few from the catwalk shows I went to…

The George Award ceremony was presented by Zoe Hardman, with celebrities/industry professionals in the audience including; Dianna Vickers (sat in front of me), Sam Freeman, Lilah Parsons, Amy Willerton, Henry Conway & Agi & Sam.

Alongside other awards that night, the final winners were:

Best Menswear: Aimee Dunn of Nottingham Trent University

Best Womenswear : Grace Weller, Bath Spa Uni

Gold Award: Grace Weller, Bath Spa Uni
This was the ultimate prize given by George clothing, for the Graduate Collection of the Year, which is worth £10,000 Grace will now be creating a limited edition with George – so keep a look out!
